Raj: Why I decided to enter politics

"I am a lifelong Liberal.  In fact, I think that it is part of my DNA.  My father was a dedicated liberal in India before coming to Canada in 1967 (he was excited to see the Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup in his first year in Canada, although it’s been a long wait for the second Cup). My mother and I followed him to Canada in 1969.  I was a year and a half.

My parents chose Canada because they knew that they would have the opportunity to live their lives in peace and security, and more importantly, that their children would not be judged by their name, their religion or their language.  Canada provides an opportunity for all its citizens to be celebrated by their individual merits.

Growing up in Canada, I played team sports, such as ice hockey, tennis, football and soccer.  Through playing on a team I learned valuable life lessons - everyone has an important role to play but we can achieve victory only if we all play as a united group.  As an adult I have taken these lessons to heart and applied them to my daily life.  As a business owner, as a community member or as a director on a number of boards, including the local Liberal riding association, I have experienced the importance of working collaboratively, of listening to others and of appreciating different points of view.

These are the same attributes I feel are necessary to be a successful Member of Parliament.  When we work together we realize that we are more similar than we may think and in doing so, we can make great achievements for our community and for our country.

As a pharmacist, I treat everyone with respect and dignity and focus on helping people achieve their health goals by using evidence-based protocols that will enable them to heal and lead healthy lives.

I believe that my professional training, my life experience, and my passion for helping people will be a strong foundation for my role as the Member of Parliament for Kitchener Centre.  I do not aspire to be a voice for Ottawa in Kitchener, but to be a strong voice for Kitchener Centre in Ottawa!"
